Imperial Palaces: A Wine Packaging Design Inspired by Chinese Tradition

A Premium Collection Symbolizing Wealth, Longevity, and Success

Imperial Palaces is a premium wine collection designed by Min Lu that combines the elegance of traditional Chinese patterns with the art of wine packaging. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Qing Dynasty, this collection showcases exquisite craftsmanship and delivers meaningful wishes of wealth, longevity, and success.

The packaging design of Imperial Palaces draws inspiration from the intricate patterns found in traditional Chinese art. Each bottle is adorned with patterns that have deep cultural significance. For example, the fish symbolizes wealth and abundance, while the peony represents royalty, virtue, and wealth. The crane, a symbol of longevity, adds a touch of elegance to the design.

What sets Imperial Palaces apart is its dual purpose. It is not just a wine set, but also a special collection that can be cherished and displayed. The bottles can be repurposed as design elements in homes, adding a touch of Chinese culture and tradition to any space.

The realization of this design involved a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The labels and boxes were digitally printed, with gold foil hot stamping adding a touch of luxury. A matte varnish was applied to the box surface, enhancing its visual appeal.

The Imperial Palaces wine bottles have a capacity of 75 cl, with a height of 28.8 cm and a diameter of 8.2 cm. The dimensions were carefully chosen to ensure a comfortable grip and a visually pleasing aesthetic.

This project was initiated in December 2018 in the United States and completed in February 2019. Extensive research was conducted to understand the symbolism of Chinese ancient decorations and to create a package design that would capture the attention of buyers. The goal was to make customers reconsider the product not only as a wine set, but also as a representation of memorable moments and cultural significance.

The design process presented several challenges, particularly in the illustration phase. The combination of ancient printing techniques and digital illustration required meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, the choice of paper played a crucial role in expressing the classic character of the design, with a texture reminiscent of cotton.

Imperial Palaces has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2019, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Imperial Palaces is not just a wine packaging design; it is a celebration of Chinese tradition and culture. With its exquisite patterns and meaningful symbolism, this collection is a perfect gift for loved ones during Spring Festivals or the New Year. It is a testament to the fusion of art, design, and tradition, creating a truly unique and memorable experience.
